ThruYOU

March 10th, 2009 § 0

If you spend all day on the internet like I do (working, dammit!) then you may well have seen this already as it’s been around almost everywhere, and that’s normally enough to keep me from posting a “hey wow look at this!!!” link, but in this case it very much bears repeating.

Anyone who’s spent any time clicking randomly around YouTube will know that people are wont to post videos showing off their musical skills, be it their latest band video, the fact that they can play Pachelbel’s Canon really well, or just singing a few warbley notes in that horrid R&B “hunt-a-note” style that still seems so popular. (Mariah Carey has a lot to answer for…)

Imagine, then, that someone took the painstaking time to hunt down loads of videos on YouTube, and remix them into new coherent – and viable – musical entities. Brand new songs, composed of unrelated pieces of music, played across the globe by people who never met.

Imagine that this person cut together not one, but seven of these songs, and that they all work beautifully.

Imagine no longer. I stop talkee, you clickee watchee. It’s called THRU YOU, and it rocks my socks. (That link goes to track 3, which is my favourite, but you should really take the time to check them all out.)

Watch it?

March 31st, 2008 § 5

Been offline for a leetle while. Quick round-up:

  • Have bought car, a ’96 Honda Civic LS 1.6i, it had some major overheating problems, it’s now fixed, no thanks to the guy in South Woodford who charged me £115 to replace a part that wasn’t broke, MASSIVE thanks to the guy in Leytonstone who actually knew something about the car and bled the system and charged me £30 for the trouble, saving me from the ~£600 the first guy was talking about for changing the head gasket.
  • Am in new band, is a covers band, will be doing the rock thing in and around the Hastings area starting in roughly 6 weeks, is called JackBarrel, features occasional lead vocals from Moi.
  • Am becoming mildly worried by the extent of my addiction to the works of Stephen Fry.
  • Am spending spare time (yeah, right) watching the entire archive of The Show, by Ze Frank. My favourite episode so far was 5th May 2006. Well I don’t know if it was my favourite, but it made me laugh far too loud in the office and make people stare at me. Ze is my new hero.

On that subject, would you watch something similar if made by me? Soon I’ll have a laptop with a webcam built in and a processor that can handle video editing, so it’s a possibility. I’m thinking I’ll probably more-or-less rip off Ze’s format. However:

  1. Ze is funny, intelligent, witty and sexy, whereas I am… English. I don’t have the mental or social equipment to produce satire of the quality that Ze does, but I can probably manage a few knob jokes and a couple of “laugh at the stupid news story” moments.
  2. There’s no way I could do a show 5 days a week – even once a week. It would probably be more like once a month or so, which was what I intended for the rock podcast Bucket of Rocks, and even that just got too time-consuming in the end.

So yeah. If I build it… will you come? (No, not like that… ew.)
