The Programmer’s Bill of Rights

September 13th, 2006 § 0 comments § permalink

Genius. I’m more a coder than a programmer (though I’m doing more programming in my new job than I was at my last – yes, JavaScript counts as programming) but this applies to all developers.

The chairs is the most common downfall. People seem unable (or unwilling) to grasp the two basic principles: i) if I have to take even half a day off due to back problems, or RSI caused by improper sitting posture which could have been solved by a decent chair, then that is costing the company almost the price of a decent Herman Miller; ii) if you are uncomfortable, you are distracted, and if you are distracted, you are not working well.

Actually, that one applies to designers too – or perhaps all people who spend all day working with computers. Back problems are bad, mmmkay. :-)

E Motions

I read several sites as a matter of course and one of them is Jeffrey Zeldman’s.

Go and read this and see if you can complete it without crying. I know I couldn’t.

Then, as I was wiping my eye and trying not to let my boss (who sits next to me and is more a mate than a boss) see that I was getting a bit teary, I saw an MSN message from my girlfriend’s 19-year-old* cousin saying that he’d been checking out some old Roxy Music videos online and that even when young, Bryan Ferry still looked like a rock spider**.

And I burst out laughing.

So here I am – one second moved to tears by an account by an American web-celebrity who I’ve never met about his mother’s decline into Alzheimer’s, and I am then cheered immediately by a humourous (if dubious) comment live from Australia.

It’s a wonderful web-wide-world, innit?

* I think – apologies to Roland if I got that wrong.

Gig Aftermath

October 14th, 2005 § 1 comment § permalink

So, massive, huge, deranged, wet, slightly violent, big, red, gristly thanks to all people who came to the Little Monkeys/Spit Like This/LA Guns gig on Tuesday night – specifically Evil Dave, Richard, Dave Barlow, Paul Simpson, Paul Creedy, Paul Hanness, Chucky, Mathias, Charlie, Johan, Jake, Warren, Jude, Ulyssa, Andrew & May, James, Carol, Steve, Julie, and anyone else I’ve managed to miss off the list.

We had a great night, and the general opinion was that we rocked the roof off the place! Personally I’ve never seen the main room of the Underworld full while the first band is playing – until we filled it on Tuesday. So thanks again to you all, and keep an eye on the website for further developments and gig news!

Rock on!

The HORROR!

Paul, what the hell happened???

Of Jaguars and Hanness

August 2nd, 2005 § 2 comments § permalink

I’m a touch puzzled. Let me tell you why.

Over the weekend, I was informed by one of the other monkeys that we’d been approached via email by a band called Skintight Jaguars with a view to us supporting them at some London gigs, which is exactly what we’re after at the moment.

This is superb news, and a couple of us are going to go see them play in Camden tonight and hopefully have a chat with them about gigs and that.

But we wondered how they’d found us. So on mooching round their site a little, we found an entry in their guestbook recommending us to them, made by a chap called Paul Hanness, who on his links page has not only LM, but also this site right here, cm.com. I find this a teeny bit strange, as to my knowledge I don’t know the guy at all! Of course, it’s possible that I do know him, as my memory is utterly terrible, but I don’t think I do. I’m unable to turn up a photo of him at the moment, so I can’t be sure.

So that’s the nature of my puzzlement – who are you, Paul Hanness? Whoever you are, though, thanks for recommending us to the Jaguars! Let me buy you a beer sometime!

Limbs

I’m back from holiday, and yes it was fantastic. Pics to follow.

I’m off golfing with my dad later today (he’s 79 and I’ve never played a round of golf with him – mind you, I’ve never played a round of golf at all…) and then this weekend it’s MONKEY GIG TIME.

See here and here for details.

ROCK ON.

Where Am I?
