A while back people were using pics from my guitars page as their own on forums and the like, which was eating up my monthly bandwidth allowance (which I pay for). So I decided to put a simple measure in place which when people tried to do this, sent them an image of my choosing instead. Admittedly, I made it quite sarcastic, but this was to try to stop people from doing it again.
Today I received an email from “clive murray” with an email address of “clivemurraysawanker@[domain]” reading as follows:
“Telling people they are a bandwidth thief is a real arsehole attitude and will get your site hacked to pieces.
1/ I only wanted to reference a gibson picture for a 3d model I am creating.
2/ I didn’t fail, I still got the picture.
3/ tell google if you dont want it on the image search.”
There was a fourth point too, but it related to the sarcy content of the image I used, which has changed now.
Since I doubt the email address this person used was real, I’m posting here, as they will be unlikely to get my reply.
Basically, whoever you are, thanks very much! I had no idea you could prevent Google Images from spidering your site, but now I do, and the correct measures have been put in place. And, as I said in my reply:
1) If you’d emailed me, I’d have given you the image no problem.
2) No problem - the image is technically copyrighted to me, but since you’re just using it for research I have no problem with you using it.
3) Like I say, thanks for pointing this out!
I agree that the content of the replacement image was too sarcastic, and perhaps a little “arsehole”-ish, so this has now been changed, and the problem should go away anyhow since Google won’t be spidering my images any more.
If anyone reading this has similar problems and would like to stop Google from spidering their images, see here.
By the way - images on the web are not necessarily free. Images taken by me and displayed on my web pages are covered by the copyright statement on every page of this site. It’s up to me what I do with them.

Thanks clive, the google image blocking doofer is sure to come in handy.
When some stupid Harry Potter fansite started using one of my photographs without permission, leaching off my server, I posted in their forums asking them to stop. My post disappeared. So I replaced the image with some really *nasty* porn.
