I read the worst piece of news imaginable in this morning’s Metro - Mayor Ken Livingstone (who I’m generally a fan of) is to introduce technology into the London Underground system to allow the use of mobile phones.
If you’re not a Londoner, or you don’t commute to work on the tube, you can have no idea how bad that news is. Seriously, I’m not kidding one bit.
It’s the one last bastion of peace, the one place where as a commuter you know you won’t have to listen to fifty inane conversations about NOTHING. The only other place this is true is on a plane, and they don’t fly from Leyton to Oxford Circus.
Honestly, this is terrible. It’s horrific. Ken has made a diabolocally wrong move here, and it must be stopped. I’m looking into how to set up an online petition against this, but in the meantime I urge you to visit the wonderfully useful FaxYourMP.com and do exactly that. I have.
Spread the word, get everyone to do the same, and perhaps we can keep the tube gibbering-idiot-free.
Please. I’m serious.

Blimey!
I shall be faxing my MP, my London Assembly representative and probably Terry Wogan for good measure.
Sadly, it won’t help. IIRC, the money being paid by the phone companies to LU to do this is intended to keep the tube running. Sorry.
